Targus HD3 Gaming Chill Mat for up to 18 Inch Laptops AWE57US (Black) Reviews
25 of 26 people found the following review helpful I would pass on this one., September 28, 2010 By Robert C. (NY, New York) - See all my reviews This review is from: Targus HD3 Gaming Chill Mat for up to 18 Inch Laptops AWE57US (Black) (Personal Computers) Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program ( What's this?) I had high hopes when I opened the box. The device was light, sleek and attractive (for a laptop cooler). Unfortunately, I immediately discovered some major flaws.
I plugged the device into my Lenovo Thinkpad R40 which tends to run hot. There is no mention of this on the Amazon product page, but there is no A/C power adapter included. The product is designed to draw power directly from your laptop via a split, dual USB cable included with the unit. If your laptop is short on free USB ports, this could be a deal breaker. You can use one or both USB leads to power the cooler. They recommend using both for "maximum cooling," but I only detected a slight difference in the max fan speed when using both USB leads as opposed to using only one (that was while the laptop was plugged into a/c power - there might be a more discernible differerence on some laptops, especially if running from battery power). But that is the least of your concerns.
The cooler has a... Read more
13 of 14 people found the following review helpful Solid, portable cooling mat for gaming laptops, September 23, 2010 By This review is from: Targus HD3 Gaming Chill Mat for up to 18 Inch Laptops AWE57US (Black) (Personal Computers) Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program ( What's this?) The Targus HD3 Gaming Chill Mat is a sleek looking cooling pad aimed for larger, gaming laptops which tend to produce a lot of heat. Most of the mat is made of plastic, while the top is a thin, perforated sheet of metal. There are feet on the bottom to keep the mat raised up and allow air to flow through. Inside are three, low-profile fans that blow upwards. There's a small dial (like an old Gameboy volume dial) on the side that controls the speed of the fans and a USB Mini-B port on the back edge.
Despite the large dimensions, the chill mat is surprisingly light, which makes it incredibly convenient for the on-the-go gamer. It's thin enough to fit into a large laptop case along with your laptop, and the only cable needed is a short USB cable with two USB A (regular) connectors on one end and a single USB Mini-B on the other end.
Fortunately, the fans aren't whiny but you can definitely feel and hear them. At the highest setting, the sound is comparable to... Read more
11 of 14 people found the following review helpful Am I missing something? This is supposed to cool things down right?, September 23, 2010 By This review is from: Targus HD3 Gaming Chill Mat for up to 18 Inch Laptops AWE57US (Black) (Personal Computers) Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program ( What's this?) Maybe I'm missing something here as this is the first time I've tried one of these laptop coolers. Somehow, though, I don't think I am.
I've got a 15" Macbook Pro that's about 2 years old now. If I let it sit there doing nothing (but powered on), it'll usually be fine on its own. But if I run Parallels or a game or anything that starts to churn the CPU or GPU--as you'd expect--she gets hot enough to cook on.
Because of this, I installed this smc fan controller app that outputs the internal temperature and the current fan speed (defaults to something like 2000 rpm so it's nice and quiet). I can view this info in the menu bar and can switch between various RPMs to cool the laptop down.
With that, I got the Targus mat and first off wondered how the hell this thing was going to do any good. It's a big lump of plastic with three 80mm case fans in the middle. It has an LED indicator to indicate when it's powered and two USB connections--each can power the... Read more
